What do pavement ants look like?

Pavement ants have dark bodies with lighter-colored legs; they are easily identified by the narrow, parallel grooves on their heads and thoraxes. These ants are about 1/16 to 1/8 inch long and have 12-segmented antennae that end in a 3-segmented club.

Biology of pavement ants

The developmental time (egg to adult) is 36 to 63 days.

Indoors, swarmers emerge anytime. Outdoors, pavement ant swarmers emerge in June and July.

Where do pavement ants nest?

Pavement ants nest outdoors under flat stones, under and beside sidewalks, along curbing, and under concrete slabs.

Inside structures, they nest in walls, insulations, and floors. During the winter, they tend to nest near sources.

What do pavement ants eat?

Pavement ants feed on insects, meats, seeds, sweets, and pet food but they prefer meats and greases. 

Are pavement ants dangerous?

Pavement ants are capable of stinging but only do so if provoked. They are not aggressive and are not considered a public health risk. 

How did I get pavement ants?

If you’ve found pavement ants in your home, they probably found their way inside through cracks in the foundation or other openings on the ground level while out foraging for food sources.
